Owner Alex Guarneri matures his cheeses to perfection in cellars underneath the market, before bringing them upstairs to line the shop walls. The adjoining restaurant, run by his brother Leo, provides an ideal pit stop for a glass of wine and a cheese board. Since 1909 the Parisian cheese making and maturing House of Androuet has preserved the heritage of cheese making.
It was founded by Henry Androuet, then continued by his son Pierre, inventor of the famous Bourguignon cheese the Brillat-Savarin and founder of a cheese restaurant in Rue D’Amsterdam, Paris. Faithful to tradition, the House of Androuet works hand in hand with the smallest farm producers. Androuet celebrates more than 100 years of tradition and excellence by opening a new cheese shop and cheese and restaurant in Old Spitalfields Market, London.
The owners, Alex and Leo, arrived in London 4 years ago in their early twenties and began to sell cheese on a stall in Old Spitalfields Market, which progressed into a permanent premises. They are passionate about quality food and wine, and love sharing their passion with all. The cheese shop stores more than 80 cheeses at a time, with the selection changing according to the season (more than 200 cheeses are featured during a year).
The cheeses are from small producers and mostly from raw milk (pasteurised cheeses are available too) and predominantly French (as one would expect). However, a partnership with Paxton & Whitﬁeld means there is also a substantial British offering with Italian, Spanish and many more cheeses also available. The cheese shop also offers fine wines to take away, top charcuterie, authentic French bread, crackers, accessories, books and everything associated with cheese.
Androuet also supplies restaurants across London, providing they have the same passion for quality. e.g. Galvin Cafe a Vin and La Chapelle, Brawn, Terroirs, Les Trois Garçons, The French Embassy, Tom Aiken… It makes the perfect place to organise corporate or personal events.
Androuet is also famous for its customer service, and they are pleased to tailor a cheese and wine tasting, or a canapés cocktails to meet your requirements. Adjacent to the cheese shop there is a sweet little cheese restaurant where you can lunch and dine, or just stop for a glass of wine with a beautiful cheese board. The food menu features homemade food with top quality ingredients created by the chef Alessandro Grano. The fondue is known as being the best in London, and their special blend is changing weekly, but Raclette and Tartiflette are of course also on the menu.
